Common Questions About Boarding Your Dog

As the days get longer and summer vacation nears, you may be considering who will care for your pet during any extended trips!  Having your dog boarded with a trusted trainer is one of the best options to ensure your pet is well cared for so that you can enjoy a stress-free vacation.  Leaving your pet behind can be nerve-wracking and you may have a plethora of questions about the dog boarding experience and what to expect. Today we’re walking you through boarding with Adaptive Canine Training and getting you answers to some of our most frequently asked questions!

First, what is boarding?

Simply put, boarding refers to a service provided by pet care professionals where a dog is provided accommodations and care while an owner is away.  The level of care, services and amenities provided during boarding vary from providers.

At Adaptive Canine Training, we often say that our biggest weakness is also our biggest strength.  As a small business, our boarding capacity is smaller than some of the larger chain boarding facilities.  This means with less dogs coming in we can guarantee your pet will receive individual, personalized attention when boarding with Adaptive Canine Training.  With training being the cornerstone of our business, boarding with us also means that we’ll utilize our time together with your pup to hone skills or work through any behavior concerns.

Now that you know the basics of what boarding is all about - you’re probably curious about a few other aspects of the boarding process.  Below are some of the most commonly asked questions we receiving about boarding your dog in Portland.

Where does a dog stay?

At Adaptive Canine Training, your dog will spend their boarding time in a family home.  Unlike larger facilities, your canine companion will feel comfortable in a space that is more akin to their regular lifestyle vs. a caged facility.  Kennels are kept in the main area of the home allowing your dog to have their own space while still remaining close to the trainers and comfortable normalcy of a family space.

What does a typical day look like?

When a dog is boarding with Adaptive Canine Training you can expect them to have structured days with daily routines to maximize their time with us.  Each day will consist of structured meal times in the morning and evening.  The day will be filled with any training that may be part of their individualized program, with quiet time or a nap break in the middle of the day to ensure rest and relaxation.  Your dog will never be left alone, providing them with comfort and supervision throughout their stay.  The goal of our boarding program is to put your dog through the paces of a normal day and look for any areas with room for improvement to focus on.

One of the benefits of our boarding program happening within the family home, is the opportunity to have your dog practice being calm during the chaos that inevitably occurs inside a family home.  With a keen eye from a trainer present to look for opportunities to hone your dog’s attention and demeanor to ensure your dog is behaving appropriately.

How far in advance should I book boarding for my dog?

As a small business with limited availability - the sooner you book the better to ensure we can accommodate your needs!  On average, booking a month out is common, however we can accommodate planning further in advance and encourage it when able!

At Adaptive Canine Training, we pride ourselves on providing your canine companion with a stable and comfortable environment with our boarding program allowing you to rest easy on your time away!  Ready to book your summer travel?  Get in touch to secure your boarding today.
