Introducing the Sport Dog Training Program

At Adaptive Canine Training, we know that a well-trained dog is a happy dog. But what comes after obedience? Whether you’re looking to add purpose to your dog’s routine, deepen your bond, or simply find a new way to tire them out, our new Sport Dog program is designed to answer that call.

What is Sport Dog?

Sport Dog is a specialized training service designed for dogs who have already mastered the basics and are ready for a new challenge. This program channels your dog’s natural drives into fun, structured athletic activities. It’s perfect for high-energy dogs, working breeds, or any pup who seems to always have a little extra in the tank.

Rather than focusing solely on obedience, Sport Dog emphasizes skill-building, engagement, and mental stimulation. Think of it as the next level in your dog’s training journey that’s tailored to their physical abilities and instincts.

Our Sport Dog program revolves around three core activities: pulling, retrieving, and sniffing.

Pulling

Dogs love to pull. It’s part of their DNA. In this part of the program, we’ll teach your dog how to pull safely and productively. Pulling can be applied to a variety of dog-powered sports including:

  • Running

  • Biking

  • Skiing

  • Skateboarding or rollerblading

  • Weight-pulling or sled-pulling

We’ll condition your dog to understand pulling cues, build strength and stamina, and ensure they work safely in a harness without stress or injury.

Retrieving

From casual games of fetch to advanced challenges, we’ll teach your dog how to retrieve with precision and purpose. Whether your goal is dock diving, disc sports, or just impressing your friends with a “retrieve the stuffed pig” command, we’ll build the skill from the ground up. We can even teach your dog to identify and retrieve objects by name, creating fun, interactive games that stimulate both body and mind.

Sniffing (Nosework)

Dogs experience the world through their noses, and nosework allows them to use that talent in an enriching, constructive way. We’ll teach your dog how to detect and locate specific scents, which can lead to activities like hide-and-seek games, scent trails, or even truffle hunting. Nosework is not only great mental stimulation, it’s also fantastic for building focus and confidence.

Agility Foundations

While we don’t currently have a full agility course on-site, we offer focused skill-building to prepare your dog for agility challenges. Many dogs struggle with specific obstacles, such as jumping on unfamiliar surfaces or navigating tunnels. We’ll work through those blocks, teaching dogs how to gain confidence and master foundational agility movements. Whether your dog is preparing for a future in competitive agility or just enjoys the thrill of the course, we’ll make sure they’re set up for success.

Who is This For?

The Sport Dog program is for any dog with basic obedience who needs more; more challenge, more enrichment, and more fun! If your dog is bouncing off the walls, showing signs of boredom, or if you’re simply looking to deepen your training journey, Sport Dog is the next step. It’s ideal for:

  • High-energy or working breeds

  • Dogs who are too smart for their own good

  • Owners looking to stay active with their dogs

  • Anyone exploring competitive dog sports

    Why It Matters

Too often, behavior issues stem from boredom, lack of stimulation, or underutilized potential. Sport Dog not only builds new skills, it gives your dog a job. And when dogs have a job, they feel good. They’re more confident, more focused, and more connected to their people.
